Why Ultrafiltration system can not be used to Desalinate water

 

Ultrafiltration system membrane has a strong filtration performance, thus mainly be used to intercept harmful substances in water, while keeping the pH value of product water unchanged. Ultrafiltration can effectively remove large proteins, bacteria and similar substances. While if need to desalinate water or remove calcium and magnesium ions in water, better use nanofiltration system or reverse osmosis system.

 

The ultra-filtration membrane common pore size is 0.1-0.01um, and the molecular weight cut off is between 1000 and 300,000. The diameter and molecular weight of calcium and magnesium ions, etc. are much smaller than this value. Therefore, UF system is not workable to desalinate water or remove calcium and magnesium ions in water.

 

The process of using an ultrafiltration membrane with a pore size of 1.0 to 20.0 nm or more to filter a solution containing macromolecules or fine particles and separating the macromolecules or fine particles from the solution is called ultrafiltration.

 

Similar to reverse osmosis system, the driving force of ultrafiltration system is also the pressure difference, pressurizing the solution side, so that the solvent is separated through the membrane. Unlike reverse osmosis, in the ultrafiltration process, small molecule solutes will pass through the ultrafiltration membrane along with the solvent.

 

The essence of ultrafiltration is sieving, adsorption and clogging of particles in the pores of the membrane surface. The ultrafiltration membrane is an asymmetric membrane. Its surface active layer has micropores with a pore size of 10-9 to 2×10-8m, which can retain macromolecules and colloidal particles with a relative molecular weight of more than 500. The pressure difference used is 0.1 to 0.5MPa. However, the ultrafiltration reverse osmosis membrane can remove the scaling cores such as colloids in the water, which can reduce the scaling degree to a certain extent.

 

Due to the serious water pollution and secondary pollution, it is difficult to achieve the effect of deep purification of drinking water with ordinary filter media. The ultrafiltration membrane purification technology adopts the high-precision pure physical filtration principle, does not add any chemical substances, and relies on the densely covered micropores on the surface of the ultrafiltration membrane for sieving, thereby retaining harmful substances, so as to achieve the effect of filtration purification and purification.
