Reverse osmosis membrane plant Inlet water quality requirements


When designing professional reverse osmosis membrane plant for users, the source water sample need to be tested to check water quality first, then can better design reverse osmosis membrane plant to fit the needs of customers.

 

Reverse osmosis membrane plant can be used in chemical, pharmaceutical, food and other industries. Because of the structure, material, and desalination mechanism of the reverse osmosis membrane element, the reverse osmosis membrane plant has high requirement for in inlet water quality.The pre-treatment will be designed before reverse osmosis membrane system to ensure water meet inlet water quality requirements to prevent to blockage of system and extend the life service of it.

 

Reverse osmosis membrane plant Inlet water quality requirements as below:

1) Temperature conditions are usually between 1 and 45°C

2) pH=4~7

3) Residual chlorine content <0-1mg/L

4) Iron content (mg/L): when dissolved oxygen>5mg/L, Fe<0.05

5) Organic content (COD)<3mg/L

6) Turbidity (NTU)<1.0

7) Sludge density index (SDI value) <5

8) Hardness is 10-250mg/

 

If inlet water can not meet the above standard, situation as below will occur:

1) Membrane be contaminated by metal oxides.

2) Colloid pollution.

3) Membrane be blocked by suspended solids.

4) Membrane be fouled.

 

The raw water will be allowed to feed in reverse osmosis membrane plant only if it meets the above conditions, otherwise the reverse osmosis membrane will be blocked, then the product water quality can not be ensured, so the service life of reverse osmosis membrane plant also will be shortened. Recording operational data timely and normalizing system performance is important to find the system default early and solve it as soon as possible to avoid extra loss.

 

How to judge whether the membrane is contaminated:

1) Under the standard situation, the product water flow decrease or operation pressure increase

2) The pressure difference between the inlet water and the concentrated water increases

3) The weight of the membrane element increases

4) The membrane desalination rate be increased or decreased significantly

5) There is obvious color change be shown on the surface of the membrane element, or there are crystals, or there are sticky substances, or there is a peculiar smell.
