Analysis of operational failure of Reverse osmosis system

 

1. Failure caused by the deterioration of water quality

 

In the initial design, due to the good quality of the feed water, the reverse osmosis system operation is relatively stable; however, as the quality of the subsequent feed water deteriorates, when the system cannot be optimized and improved by pretreatment, the reverse osmosis system has produced serious operating failures; It is manifested as the rapid decay rate of water production, and the rapid rise of operating pressure and pressure difference.

 

2. Failure caused by performance degradation in preprocessing

 

Due to the deterioration of the performance of the pretreatment equipment, the turbidity of the effluent seriously exceeds the RO inlet water quality requirements; the specific manifestations are the chaotic or partial flow of the filter material of the multi-media filter, the pulverization of the filter material in the activated carbon filter or the serious microbial reproduction, etc.

 

3. Failure caused by the use of inferior quality filter elements in the cartridge filter

 

The specific performance is that the diameter of the filter element of the cartridge filter is too small, the quality of the filter element is poor, the filtration accuracy is not up to the requirement, the filter element is not tightly pressed, and is easy to deform, etc.

 

4. Failure caused by improper selection and dosing of scale inhibitor

 

Specifically, the performance of the scale inhibitor does not match the water quality, the performance of the scale inhibitor metering pump is unreliable, the scale inhibitor is over-diluted, and the scale inhibitor metering box is seriously polluted, etc.

 

5. Failure caused by improper dosing of other chemicals

 

For different water quality, a certain amount and type of chemicals need to be added to increase the treatment effect of raw water. However, due to various reasons, the incorrect use and addition of these chemicals may have serious consequences.

The specific performance is that unsuitable flocculants cause serious membrane fouling, excessive dosing of oxidant causes membrane oxidation, excessive dosing of reducing agent causes serious membrane fouling, etc.

 

6. Failure caused by instrument failure

 

The specific performance are:

-The concentrated water flow rate is displayed too large (actually smaller), which causes the reverse osmosis recovery rate to be too high, resulting in fouling

-The concentrated water flow rate is too small (actually larger), causing the reverse osmosis recovery rate to be too low, resulting in a pressure difference

-The flowmeter reading fluctuates too much, and it is impossible to judge correctly according to the ratio of 10-15%

 

7. Faults caused by device design defects and improper operation and maintenance

 

The specific performance are:

-In the initial design, the head of the high-pressure pump is selected to be low, which causes the water production to fail to meet the design requirements when the temperature or the quality of the inlet water changes

-Oxidation of membrane elements causes an increase in water flux and a decrease in water quality

-The salt water seal ring is inverted or damaged, causing the actual recovery rate to be too high, resulting in scaling and lowering of water quality;

-The mixed use of new and old membrane elements and different types of membrane elements will cause system performance degradation;

-The overlap or partial overlap of the concentrated water thrust ring of the pressure vessel with the concentrated water outlet will cause the recovery rate to be too high and cause fouling;

-The increase in the back pressure of the produced water causes a decrease in the production of water;

-Unreasonable arrangement of reverse osmosis causes increase in water flux of local membrane elements and speed up pollution;

-The design of reverse osmosis recovery rate is unreasonable, and the number of membrane elements is too small;

-Particulate pollution causes serious mechanical fouling of membrane elements, and the pressure difference in one stage is too large, resulting in poor water production and water quality;

-Pollutant deposition and bacterial and microbial contamination caused by system shutdown.
